Breakthrough of the Year Award

We are thrilled and honoured to have been awarded “Breakthrough of the Year” at the 2017 Community Spirit Award. The award was presented to us in recognition of the Respite Facility we have recently established in Ripponden which aims to extend the reach of our charity and broaden the range of services we offer to our community.

Thank You To Our Volunteers

A big thank you to all the volunteers that have been busy helping us at Next Step throughout the summer.

The team from the Princes Trust have been sprucing up at King Cross in  the area around the front and side of the centre. They have given our sensory board a revamp and tidied up all of our potted plants! The same team have also been helping at our respite house making the outside area look neat and tidy.

Jack and his team from Lloyds spent a day at our house in Ripponden working on the outside area, and digging and clearing the weeds. They have tidied up all around our new decking area and made the place look extra special.

The Intermediary Support Team from Lloyds banking group spent two days painting our King Cross centre. Our physiotherapy room, hall and stair case now look light, bright and new! Thank you

 


 

 

Market Stall Dates

We will be holding a number of stalls throughout the summer months, 16th June, 21st July and 18th August at Sowerby Bridge market and on 7th July and 4th August in Halifax outside Wilko. If you can spare any time on any of those days we would be grateful of any helpers to man our stalls. We are still collecting stock and would be grateful of donations to sell on our stalls, please drop any clothing or bric a brack at any of our centres.

 


 

Bags of help!

Next Step have been awarded first prize in Tesco’s Bags of help scheme. We have been awarded a massive £5000 so thank you to everyone who voted for Next Step in store with their blue tokens. The money will be used for a adapted sensory area with decking and raised flowerbeds at our new house in Ripponden.

 


 

Auction Night Success

Thank you to Emma and Henny who organised a wonderful evening at our Auction Night. We managed to raise an amazing £1500 to use for new equipment for our respite house. Everyone who attended enjoyed a night of fun and entertainment! Well done to Fee for your wonderful auctioneering skills on the microphone! We would like to thank everyone who attended and of course the businesses and individuals who donated all of our wonderful prizes.

 


 

Eggs Galore!

Thank you to Shezad, Annabel and their team at Lloyds Banking group for bringing us chocolate treats for Easter! The eggs went down a treat!

Graham Pearson Retires

One of our longest standing trustees Graham Pearson has retired after 10 years of loyal support to The Next Step Trust. Graham was instrumental in providing guidance and expert business knowledge right from the very start of NST and throughout its ever successful growth – which is undoubtedly partly due to his commitment and foresight.

Graham started out as our very first CEO, retired – and then became the Chairman of our Trustee Board, a position he held right up to his final retirement. Graham will be missed but we know that he will enjoy a well deserved rest with his wife Claire.

At our 10th birthday party in October 2016 Graham announced his intention to retire which was formally acknowledged by our current Chief Executive, Preet who thanked Graham for his loyal support.

From the very bottom of our hearts we extend an enormous thank you to Graham for everything he has contributed to our success. He should be very proud of his achievements as indeed we are of him. Thank you Graham and happy retirement from every single person involved at The Next Step Trust.

100 Mile Challenge For Comic Relief

We are challenging our Next Steppers to achieve a 100 mile challenge in aid of comic relief. The goal is to collectively travel 100 miles throughout the month of March, either walking, cycling, on the treadmill, or getting out and about using your wheelchair. We will add up everyone’s personal achievements and complete our target goal.

We would really appreciate it if you could please sponsor us and help us to support this year’s Comic Relief fund. Please spread the word to your families and friends.

We will be selling cakes on Friday 23rd March and we welcome Next Steppers and Staff to wear red noses to support the cause.

Auction Night Confirmed

We are holding an auction night to raise funds for our new Respite Facility on Saturday 6th May 2017 between 7pm and 11pm at The Old Crossleyans Rugby Club, Standeven House, Broomfield Avenue, Halifax HX3 0JE

There will be a live band and entertainment, plus a raffle and a buffet. Some of the auction prizes include:

A barge day trip for 12 people donated by the Anchor Trust. 4 x make-overs donated by Harvey’s. Cases of pop donated by Coca Cola. Eureka pass for the whole family donated by Eureka Children’s Museum. A Hand Drawn Portrait of a family member or pet donated by John Harrtley, AND MUCH MORE!

Auction To Raise Valuable Funds For Our Respite Service

We plan to hold an auction in the next few months specifically aimed at helping us to raise valuable funds to help equip the new property we have recently purchased in Ripponden, which will enable us to offer a much needed respite service.

We are asking for input from anyone who would be able to contribute in any way towards the event. This may include items to be auctioned. A venue to host the event. Time to help organise. Any contacts you may have. And much more.

The respite facility will benefit so many of our families that it really is a worthwhile venture – one that has been high on our wish list for many years. We are so excited that we will soon be in a position to offer this service and we intend to make it the best possible.

Open Day At Our New Ripponden Property

We have planned an open day on the 25th January 2017 at our newly- acquired property in Ripponden. This will give us chance to meet our new neighbours within the Ripponden community which is a beautiful vibrant village. We look forward to being part of it.

Christmas Party Fun

We held our annual Christmas Party at Greetland Community Centre on 1st December. Lots of people joined us to celebrate in style (many in their Christmas jumpers!).

We were entertained by the Indian Dance Troupe Annapurna who had us tapping our toes and joining in with their routines. Fun was had by all.

We enjoyed a buffet style meal thanks to our catering team, and it was so nice to be joined by our friends from Ravenscliffe, Pennine Magpie and Gateway who were all as enthusiastic as ever.

The party was made possible mainly due to the hard work that all the staff and Next Steppers had put in throughout the year raising funds for this event.

 


 

We Have Purchased A New Building

We are very excited to announce that we have purchased a new building in Ripponden. The already adapted bungalow will undergo further alterations to bring it up to the standards required for us to be able to develop and offer a respite facility. This is a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to continue to update the services we offer to our Next Steppers. We’ll keep you informed of the progress.

 


 

10 Years – We Celebrated In Style!

As part of our 10 year celebration we held a “Birthday Party” at Arden Road Social Club on 6th October to commemorate this milestone.

A cross-section of guests were invited, including parents, carers, professionals and everyone closely linked to the Next Step Trust. All our Next Steppers and staff put on their party outfits and everyone was treated to an informative and fun day. This included a short film documenting how the Next Step Trust was first formed, speeches given by key staff members explaining the variety of support we offer, and also members of organisations whose activities and facilities we access away from our centres such as Skylite, The Orange Box, and Link 4 Life . Everyone enjoyed a lunch followed by a game of bingo, and a chance to catch up with old faces and generally socialise.

Preet Sandhu, our CEO, closed the event by explaining how incredible it was that we have come so far in such a relatively short time, and she also announced that Graham Pearson, one of our longest standing members of the board of trustees and management team, is to retire in November. Graham gave a short speech and received a small gift as a thank you for all his efforts.

A special thanks goes out to all who helped organise and contribute towards the day’s events and we will add more information and photos very soon.

 


 

Emma Takes On The Great North Run

Emma Lee will be taking part in the Newcastle Great North Run on Sunday 11th September.  Emma will be running 13.2 miles to raise money for new equipment and materials for The Next Step Trust. If you would like to sponsor Emma please contact the centre.

 


 

Market Stalls Continue To Be A Great Success

The market stalls we continue to host throughout the summer months are proving to be very successful. For example at the Mayors Stall in Halifax town centre on Friday 10th June we raised £250 and at the Sowerby Bridge stall on the 3rd June we raised £67.  We thank everyone who showed their support.

Open Day To Celebrate Our 10th Birthday

On Wednesday 8th June, The Next Step Trust Held an open day at our main centre in King Cross to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. It was a fantastic day where we were able to open our doors to friends of the charity old and new, and we were visited by the Mayor who kindly came to the centre to see our facilities.

Raffles, games and a host of activities were held to raise funds for the Trust with many prizes kindly donated by local businesses. We also sold arts and crafts items made by Next Steppers along with plants that had been grown as part of our gardening projects. These all helped to raise £370, so we thank everyone who came along and supported us.

 


 

Quiz Night To Raise Funds For Next Step

Fancy a fun night out with colleagues, family or friends whilst supporting our work? Then don’t miss the Halifax based solicitors Wilkinson Woodward’s Annual Charity Quiz Night at the Shay Football Stadium on Wednesday 13th July 2016.

Great North Swim raises over £400

Joanna Parker completed the Great North Swim on 11th/ 12th June. Her amazing efforts raised over £400 for Next Step, for which we are very grateful! Thank you Joanna and to all who supported her.

Adam’s Wembley Dream as Mascot for Halifax Town FC

Adam 22, who has attended Next Step Trust for almost 3 year, has a huge day ahead on 22nd May. He has been chosen to be a mascot for Halifax Town at Wembley.

Adam has not missed a match for 4 years and has travelled as far as Torquay to watch his idols play. He was told last week he had been chosen as a mascot and he was absolutely delighted. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Adam, he is constantly singing Wembley songs and is so excited.

Adam is really passionate about football and Halifax Town recognise this and have rewarded him with what will surely be a day to remember for him and all his family.

 


 

Kit Goes Gung-Ho!

Kit Hayfield, one of our Lead Support workers, is taking on the Gung-Ho! challenge, a 5 kilometre inflatable obstacle course to raise funds for Next Step. The event takes place in Temple Newsam, Leeds on the 14th of May. If you’d like to show your support for Kit on this unique challenge and sponsor her please get in touch with us. Autism Awareness Month

As you may know April is Autism Awareness month. To raise money, Next Step will be holding two events and will also have a sweepstake at £1 per go organised by The National Autistic Society. The prize will be £15.

Wednesday 13th April – The Great Next Step Bake Off: cakes/buns will be sold at 50p at the end of the day

Friday 15th April – Wear Blue and donate £1

Emma To Run Half Marathon To Raise Funds For NST

New Boat launch

On the 16th March at Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club, we were invited by Link 4 Life to attend the launch of a new sailing boat which has been donated to them by Rochdale East Rotary Club. The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester launched the dinghy and was accompanied by The Mayor & Mayoress of Rochdale along with members of the Rotary Club.

Celebrating our 10th Year!!!!!

We are very excited to be celebrating our 10th year in 2016.

It’s astonishing to think just how much we have grown, far beyond our initial expectations, and it is so encouraging for our future to have had so much continued support and dedication from everyone involved in our Next Step community which has made these past ten years so successful. We extend a very big thank you to you all.

To commemorate the occasion we will be running a variety of special events throughout 2016, so keep an eye on our website for further information, and we look forward to a further ten years.

 


 

“Volunteerability” Work Placements at Eureka! Update

Back in November 2014 we took part in a pilot scheme run by Eureka! The National Children’s Museum to offer some of our Next Steppers work experience opportunities within the museum.

The project was called “Volunteerabilty” and it was so successful that we are very proud to report that we are still offering work placements at Eureka! which we now fund ourselves.

As a result of the success of the project, we have been included in an International e-Magazine “InterpNEWS – International Heritage Interpretation” which details the importance of accessibly to museums and collections for people with disabilities.  The e-Magazine was published in Jan/Feb 2016.

Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge To Raise Funds

On Saturday 28th May 2016, staff, family and friends of The Next Step Trust are once again lacing up their walking boots and taking part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

Everyone involved is already putting hours of hard training in to complete the challenge to help raise funds for our Next Steppers. We have set ourselves the goal of completing the 26 mile walk in under twelve hours. The funds raised will go towards providing invaluable new equipment and materials for our service.

Ship Ahoy! New Boat Launch Day

On Wednesday 16th March 2016 @10.30-12.30 at Hollingworth Lake, a launch day will be held on behalf of Link 4 Life. The Next Step Trust has been invited to come along to help launch the new dingy boat which has been funded by the local Rochdale East Rotary Club.

The new dingy boat holds two people at a time, so instructors will take one Next Stepper out or alternatively they will instruct our support workers to take Next Steppers out independently. Link 4 life will also be setting the sailing boat out for the use of the Next Steppers, so it will really make a full, fun-packed day.

At the launch the local Mayor of Rochdale, Sheriff of Greater Manchester and Councillors will be joining us. Photos may be taken to promote the facilities/ boat on behalf of link 4 Life.

 


 

Investor In People Accreditation

We have once again been recognised as an Investor In People. In January we were reassessed and successfully gained the accreditation for a further three years.

Fund Raising for the Community Floods

Throughout February 2016 we have been helping to raise funds to support the devastating flood damage which has affected our local community.

Next Step Trust raised £182.00 by running activities across all three of our centres. These included raffles, horse racing cards, football cards and dressing in something different to show awareness. The Community Foundation very kindly match funded our donation increasing the amount we raised to £364.00.

 


 

Ravenscliffe Christmas Stall

We raised over £300 in November at the Ravenscliffe Christmas stall from a raffle and crafts made by staff and Next Steppers. Well done to all involved, and hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year.

 


 

Outreach Service Becomes Increasingly Popular

Our Outreach Service is proving to be very popular, enabling Next Steppers the opportunity to access a wide variety of activities in the evenings and weekends outside of our normal day service hours. Not only does this give them a wider variety of personal choice, but it also affords their parents and carers the freedom to help better plan their own schedules and take a well-deserved break.

Christmas Craft Fair

On Thursday 12th November we will be holding a Craft Stall at Ravenscliffe’s Christmas Fair selling handcrafted gifts made by Next Steppers during their Arts and Crafts sessions. These include Christmas cards, decorations and Dominic’s handmade bird feeders. Please come along and support us from 6pm – 8:30pm at Ravenscliffe High School, Skircoat Green.

 


 

Grab your pyjamas – It’s Children In Need Day!

On Friday 13th November staff and Next Steppers are invited to dress in their pyjamas to help raise funds for Children In Need. We suggest a donation of £1 to dress up, or a “forfeit” of £2 if you choose not to!

 


 

Quiz Night Is A Winner!

Wilkinson Woodward Solicitors helped raise a staggering £1200 for The Next Step Trust by hosting a quiz night at the Shay Stadium on the 18th June. Teams from across the region took part, including several form Next Step, and the overall winners were law firm Broadway House Chambers. They were awarded the Wilkinson Woodward Bearders Trophy. Congratulations to them, and a massive thank you to everyone who contributed to this outstanding event; especially Wilkinson Woodward for their continued support.

 


 

New Mobile Hoist

Community Foundation For Calderdale have very kindly given us a grant for a new manual hoist which is specifically designed to reach higher and lower than some of our existing mobile hoists. This feature is key to allowing better access to our newly installed ball pool area which compliments our updated sensory room. We thank CFFC for their ongoing support.

 


 

New Ceiling Hoist

The Duke of York Charity have very kindly offered us a grant to install a new ceiling hoist. This invaluable piece of equipment enables us to continue to meet the individual needs of the people who attend our centres. Thank you.

 


 

Additional Sensory Garden Area

The Princes Trust Group from Calderdale College have kindly volunteered their time to create a new sensory garden next to our conservatory and outdoor decking area. It includes a very colourful array of recycled planters and a bespoke sensory board designed and built by the college students.  This has really brightened up the garden and especially now that summer is here, it can be enjoyed from inside with the doors open, or al fresco! A very big thank you for all the effort and commitment given to us by The Princes Trust Group.

 


 

Quiz Night to Raise Funds

On Thursday 18th June 2015, Wilkinson Woodward Bearders Solicitors are hosting a quiz night where all proceeds will kindly be donated to Next Step. The event is being held at The Shay Football Stadium at 6:30pm with an entry fee of £10 per player and a maximum of five players per team.

Supper is included and there will be prizes for the top three teams.

New Sensory Room Completed

We extend a very big thank you to The Halifax Ladies Circle and The Laing Family Trust for their support in helping us update our Sensory Room. This invaluable facility enables every one of our Next Steppers to engage in multi-sensory experiences and therapies which can be tailored to meet their individual needs. We will shortly be updating the Sensory Room section of this website to give more details, but in the meantime, once again, form everyone at the Next Step Trust – Thank you!

Recycling For The Sensory Garden

We are currently running a project to update our sensory garden. We are asking people to recycle and donate the following to help us give our garden a bright and engaging environment:

Plants. Bulbs. Soil. Flower seeds. Canes. Coloured gloss paint. Wood. Wire. Metal tubes. Pipes. Insulation tape. CDs. Tyres (to use for planting in).

On Friday 13th March get involved in Red Nose Day and “Make yourself funny for money”!!! Dress or decorate yourself in something fun and donate £1, but those who choose not to should donate £2!!! Here’s to a fun-packed day for a great cause.

 


 

A Warm Welcome to our New Staff

Happy New Year to everyone! We start 2015 with a very warm welcome to our new staff members. We are very pleased to have the following people as part of our committed team:

The addition of new staff will ensure that we continue to meet the needs of all our Next Steppers.

 


 

Sensory Room Upgrade Planned for February 2015

After lots of planning, and following some very kind donations and fund raising, we are pleased to announce that our Sensory Room is due to be upgraded and relocated to the upstairs floor of our King Cross Centre in February. The work is being carried out by Experia who installed our original Sensory Room back in 2006 and will involve updating some of our existing interactive equipment as well as some brand new state-of-the-art facilities. It’s important that our Next Steppers have access to this stimulating and relaxing environment to help develop coordination skills for example, or to simply have a chill out area. The upgrade of our Sensory Room is much anticipated by both Next Steppers and Staff who are looking forward to using the facility to its full potential.

 


 

Inner Wheel Charity Donates £200

Our Chair Graham Pearson will be speaking at an event organised by the Inner Wheel Charity following their donation of  £200. On the 10th February Graham will be explaining how the Next Step Trust was set up, detailing it’s progress and success over the years which has been made possible due to the generosity of such people as Inner Wheel. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for their very kind donation.

 


 

Parents Forums

We hold regular Parents Forums three to four times a year to help maintain valuable interaction between everyone involved with our Next Steppers. These informal meetings are a great opportunity for us to invite parents and professionals to keep up to date with developments within the Care Sector.

Eureka! Work Placements

Several Next Steppers have undertaken voluntary Work Placements at Eureka! The National Children’s Museum. This has become possible due to Eureka! winning the International Award for Inclusion Project.

Sam and Dominic successfully completed their placement working in the gift shop and the “All About Me” section of the museum, and Natalie and Alex are currently working hard at the museum until Christmas.

All Next Steppers have to go through a full application and interview process to take on the role. They have an official job description, are responsible for their own time keeping, and are included in all the staff meetings relating to their position.

All involved have gained invaluable experience: They are contributing to their community; developing their social skills; and gaining real-life work experience. That in turn has extended to parents and carers of each Next Stepper who have seen, at first hand, the progress being made by these opportunities.

The positive feedback we have also received from the staff at Eureka! illustrates that the project is of mutual benefit. Staff have expressed how much they have enjoyed working alongside each Next Stepper and how that in turn has been an enriching experience.

We hope to have more work placement opportunities at Eureka! and in the meantime extend a very warm thank you to everyone involved.

Sailing and Canoeing Awards

As part of our ongoing Activities Programme, and in association with Link 4 Life, a group of Next Steppers have been awarded for their nautical achievements. Members form Link 4 Life came in to Next Step to formally acknowledge the skills gained and present certificates from “Paddle Power” and  “The Royal Yachting Association”.

The project was held over the summer months at Hollingworth Lake. A very big thank you to all at Link 4 Life who we continue to work with through the cooler times of the year at their indoor climbing wall in Littleborough.

 


 

Funding for Sensory Room Development

Halifax Ladies Circle have raised a staggering £7000 to contribute towards the development of our new Sensory Room which is due to take place as soon as possible in 2015. Our existing facility is being relocated to the upper floor of our Centre at King Cross.

The money was raised through a variety of events such as a psychic night, a race night, and a gala dinner held at Bertie’s in Elland. We would like to thank Tracy Cody of the Halifax Ladies Circle for coordinating the events and presenting us with the very generous donation. Thank you ladies.

 


 

Charity Of The Year

The Halifax Boys Brigade have chosen The Next Step Trust to be their Charity of the Year 2014. We thank them for their support.

 


 

Christmas Prom and Awards Ceremony

On the 11th of December we will be holding our prestigious Christmas Prom. After proving to be a success in the past few years we are proud to be able to host the event once again in the delightful main hall at the historic Clay House in West Vale, Greetland. As well as a sumptuous Christmas lunch, afterwards there will be a presentation for all the Next Steppers’ achievements throughout the year, accompanied by a disco. It’s the perfect opportunity for all of our Next Steppers, Staff and Parents to join together and celebrate the past year. Parents are invited to the award ceremony and for nibbles afterwards. Don’t forget your dancing shoes and Dress To Impress!!!!

To enable us to run this annual event, we hold market stalls throughout the year to raise funds. We have a stall at Sowerby Bridge market, and we host one of the Lord Mayor’s Stalls in Halifax town centre.

 


 

Progress in the Gardens

We’d like to say a huge ongoing thank you to Ian who volunteers almost every day of the week to come in to Next Step and contribute his own time towards the upkeep of our grounds and garden. Most notably, Ian has recently repainted and re-treated all of the wooden fencing and wooden structures in our sensory garden.  Ian’s hard work is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Music Sessions Continue

We welcome the return of a regular music session to be held every Wednesday afternoon at our King Cross centre. Next Steppers and staff have been keen to revive this activity and enjoyed getting involved in the new programme run by Michelle Brown. Next Steppers from all three of our centres join together to play instruments, sing and interact.

 


 

Aromatherapy Treatments Raise £240

Aromatherapy sessions are held once a week at all three of our centres. Support Worker Gillian runs the sessions with Next Steppers Natalie, Kirsty, Dominic, Maria and Alex assisting with the treatments. The team held an open session where they invited friends and family to be pampered and relax in order to raise funds for NST. They raised a fantastic £240! Well done to everyone involved, and they hope to be able to offer this service again in the future.

 


 

Veronica Retires

After many years of service as a Support Worker, Veronica Russell is set to enjoy her retirement. Veronica has always shown commitment to her role at NST and as a sign of her dedication has successfully lobbied the Council to install a much needed pelican crossing outside our King Cross site. A fitting accolade to one of our staff who will be very much missed.

Veronica held a farewell party at The Works in Sowerby Bridge to celebrate her transition, where she said she was looking forward to focussing more time on her love of print making, but she would be very sad to leave. We wish you all the very best for the future Veronica, and you’re welcome back any time.
