At Next Step Trust, we understand that everyone is unique, and we’re dedicated to providing the support that works best for each individual. We create an environment where people with autism feel safe, supported, and valued.
Providing Structure and Routine
We know that having a clear structure and routine is really important for people with autism. We provide structure for each individual based on their wants, needs and goals.  This will include input from the individual themselves, parents and the staff that support them. This helps build confidence and reduces anxiety.
A Team of Consistent Support Staff
Each next stepper we support has a core team who support that individual on a regular basis.  This helps build relationships and understanding for the people we support.  Staff provide regular feedback and input into that individual’s routine and support. We have a staff team who have experience and training around supporting those with autism.
Appropriate communication
It is important to use the most appropriate communication methods for individuals with autism as many of those on the spectrum respond better to visual information rather than just verbal cues. We make sure the language used is suitable for that individual and they are given time to process. If needed visual aids including PECS, picture timetables and objects of reference can be used as an alternative, or to provide reinforcement.
Being Flexible
While routines are important, it’s equally important to allow for flexibility when things don’t go as planned.  At Next step we want to encourage people to have some change in their routine as this helps reduce the risk of a routine that is overly rigid, and the anxiety this causes when things have to change.
